Compression Stockings
Some common symptoms of a venous (vein) disorder include:
- Heavy, aching or swollen legs
- Cramps or fatigue in your legs
- Varicose or spider veins
- Skin discoloration on the legs
- Swollen feet or ankles
At the Canadian Foot Clinic and Orthotic Centre, we have three certified compression stocking fitters available to help you:
- determine your need for compression stockings and appropriate level of compression based on your symptoms and lifestyle
- select fashionable and comfortable compression garments
- teach you optimal break-in procedures
- show you available devices to help you don your new prescription hosiery
After an assessment, we will custom measure your legs and help you chose appropriate styles. If required, a prescription is provided for insurance purposes but you may also choose to ask your medical doctor for another prescription depending on your insurance requirements.

Risk factors for developing venous problems include age (those over 40), pregnancy, obesity, occupation (those who stand for prolonged periods), genetics. As we age, the one way valves in our veins can become leaky resulting in the pooling of blood in our legs due to gravity. The heart is the natural pump to circulation to your feet, however in order for blood to return through your veins to your heart the calf muscle must contract. Compression stockings help this process and can be used for prevention and protection of your veins.
Failure to address venous problems can lead to blood clots and pulmonary embolism, ankle and leg ulcerations (wounds), fatigue and mobility problems to name a few.
