Why choose our chiropody footwear service

At the Canadian Foot Clinic & Orthotic Centre in St. Catharines, ON, our chiropodist and shoe fitters pair clinical expertise with fashionable, supportive orthopedic footwear, custom birkenstock sandals and slippers designed to accommodate foot deformities, reduce pain, and improve gait. Custom orthotics are crafted to fit deeper orthopedic shoes and can even be integrated into select sandals (e.g., Birkenstock-style and others with removeable footbeds) for everyday comfort and function.

Our footwear partners are selected for lightweight construction, durable support, and contemporary styles, so you don’t have to sacrifice looks for health. Insurance coverage may apply for orthopedic footwear and custom orthotics—check with your provider for eligibility.

What to expect at your fitting

  • Professional measurement to capture true weight-bearing size.

  • Both feet measured; shoes chosen for the larger foot and tried on with the socks you’ll wear.

  • After measuring your feet, since we want a precise fit we will order your footwear since we do not have footwear in stock other than samples.

  • Walk test in-clinic to confirm comfort, fit across the toe box, heel stability, and room for orthotics.

  • Dispensing and follow-up to ensure satisfaction and performance with your new footwear and orthotics.

Quick shoe-buying essentials (clinically recommended)

  • Fit while standing; shop later in the day when feet are slightly swollen.

  • Allow ~½ inch (thumb width) from longest toe to shoe tip.

  • Choose leather uppers, a stiff heel counter, cushioned sole, and flexibility at the ball of the foot — avoid shoes that bend in the arch.

  • Avoid shoes that require “breaking in”; they should feel comfortable immediately.

  • For children, ensure firm heel counters, built-in arch support, and room to wiggle toes; measure both feet with weight-bearing.

Risks, limitations, and insurance tips

Not all plans cover every item; OHIP does not cover footwear. Coverage varies by insurer and may require prescriptions, receipts, or pre-authorization. After becoming a patient, we can provide you with a model-specific footwear quote for you to submit to your insurer to verify coverage. Please note that insurance plans may only cover custom-made footwear which is a very specialized service not offered by our clinic and reserved for severe foot deformities. Our footwear is orthopedic (contains specialized features for your foot condition) but not custom-made. Custom orthotics are a separate item from orthopedic footwear.
